Traedonya, born in North Carolina, before migrating to the Bronx, New York City and the West Indies, is an artist, song writer, record producer and showgirl. Traedonya attended high school in New York City, before attending college at a music conservatory in New York City, studying Jazz. She moved to Europe before graduating. A move she says “That I have never regretted and glad I made.” Her mother had her practicing dance, piano, and vocal instruction programs after school. Not to mention, she was vice president for her class in high school.
The entertainer always wanted to be a singer all her life. According to her, music
was her calling since she can remember. “From a very young age, I used to sing
at family gatherings, and anytime my family would put me on the spot to sing
them a song. I always knew that singing, performing and entertaining would be
my profession as an adult,” says Traedonya. Being versatile as she is, Traedonya
appreciates many different forms of expression and genres in both music and art.
Being raised on Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, and free-styling, it is no surprise to where she
gets her musical talent.
Traedonya’s professional background in music started in her early teens when she
recorded a song called “Do The Boogaloo” on “Tuff City” at 13 years old. Only a few
years later, at the young age of 16, she recorded another single titled “Sixteen”. She
signed her first major record deal as the lead singer and co-writer of the Funk/Jazz
band Sample This! on Elektra Records. Hip Hop legend Large Professor played a huge
part in putting it together and was her main producer at the time. “He introduced
me to the two main musicians and thought that the situation would be great for
me,” Traedonya. Curtis Watts of Smokin Suckas With Logic aka SSL and Anton
Pukshansky, commonly known on the engineering scene in Hip Hop and production
and Traedonya worked on several songs on their demo together. Large Professor
and Traedonya allowed the first song that they worked together on to be recorded
by Sample This! Closing their deal with Elektra and released as a promo for the
group. That tune is called “Another Lie.”
Traedonya describes her experience with Sample This! as a wonderful experience
They (Large Professor, Curtis and Anton) recorded one full length project and a
second that they decided not to release due to artistic differences with Elektra.
After parting ways and enduring legal issues with Elektra, she attended the music
conservatory in New York City, where she studied Jazz and Fine Arts. “I wanted to
get my chops up as far as dealing with Live musicians and knowing how to speak
their language.” Attending the conservatory influenced her to pursue her musical
career outside of school because she realized that it had nothing at all o do with
the “music business.” Being the individualist that she is, Traedonya packed her bags
and moved to Europe before graduating. “To this day, I say that moving overseas
has been one of the biggest influences on my life as a working musician and as a
woman.”
After moving around, she decided to drop her bags in London, where she
lived for several years, playing out, recording and touring. Traedonya has seen the
rough areas of London and the bright areas, but she did not let that stop her from
pursuing her dream. While living in London, she flew back and forth to New York
City to record different projects as a background vocalist for other artists. She
released a critically acclaimed single produced by WET a.k.a, Asen, called “Beloved”
on Prohibition Entertainment that did really well on the “National Club Charts” in
the United States as w as the United Kingdom. The European press showed her a lot
of love for the song due to the Opera styled singing over the hardcore Hip Hop beat.
Traedonya was dubbed the “Bride of New Funk Hipopera” from a European
journalist because of the vocal styling of the song “Beloved.” The press ran with it
and the nickname has stuck with her ever since. “Beloved,” according to Traedonya,
has opened up doors for her to travel more. She claims it not only opened doors for
her but also allowed her to “rock my passport rights and to show my vocal talents
and skills through various outlets.” Traedonya has also fiddled with the fashion
industry with her music. She has done performances for fragrance and couture
designer Paco Rabanne in Moscow, Russia.
There are a list of artists that inspire Traedonya. Respectively, her mother has
been the initial inspiration for her aspiration to become a musician. Being born
in the South, and a singer from the church, was an influence and played a pivotal
role to become a singer. Lena Horne, Grace Jones,, Liza Minelli, Chaka Khan, Mary J
Blige, Annie Lennox, Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Rick James, Bootsy Collins, George
Clinton, and Cassandra Wilson. Billie Holiday, Donna Summer, Ella Fitzgerald, Al
Green, Tania Maria, and so many other greats are her biggest inspirations. She
describes life as an inspiration as well.
What has Traedonya been doing lately? At present, she has a song currently out
called “I’ll Give It 2 U” produced by Tony Ozier of “Beats Galore.” The single has
become a remix EP simply called, “I’ll give It 2 U” which is a collective group of
remixes from different mixes around the globe on it. Producers and DJs from Texas,
Ohio, England, Italy, Indonesia, France, Germany, and California, all put their own
spin to the song. Traedonya has offered fans several videos for the different remixes
with more visuals to come. Being a big fan of dub-step inspires her to consistently
create funk music for her fans.
